Genealogy and family history have been my passion since I was a young teenager. I feel that we are called to remember those that have gone on before us, to make sure that they are never forgotten. I dig until I find their stories and save them for our children. Their lives, the remembrance of them, have been given to me for safekeeping.
To My Forefathers
As I lie here among the tombs of old,
I dream about the lives you led.
Big strong men, prolific women,
A thousand stories here are told.
One of you seeking a new life,
Sailed across the ocean to a new land.
Far away from home and alone,
You set up stakes and took a wife.
One wife goes, you take another,
Babies come and babies go.
So hard was life in this new land,
Babies raised without a mother.
As I lie here at your resting place,
Centuries of family embrace me.
I feel the loss of days gone by.
Acceptance and love bring a smile to my face.
Love overwhelms me as I linger here
Words on the stones engraved on my heart
Your blood burns through me, giving me life
Your strength grows in me with each tear.
I remember your strife and hardship;
I feel your love and joy.
You are so happy in this new land,
And I feel the bond of our kinship.

oh dear. what a touching poem. They will never be forgotten as long as people like you choose to remember. 🙂 ❤

Thank you, Rosema. I’m doing all that I can to make sure they are remembered. I’m also doing my best to make sure they are known about by those that come after me. Thankfully, my children love to hear about family history. 🙂 Have a blessed day.

They spent a great deal of their childhood in cemeteries looking at name rocks with me and hearing stories of the people under them. 🙂

oh wooow! That’s great. (Though I don’t think I can do it as I have fear for cemeteries, or maybe everything about dead people.)

I don’t fear the dead(usually). They can’t hurt me. It is the living that I often have trouble with. They can, and often do, hurt me. I know lots of people that are afraid of the dead and cemeteries, etc. It is a very normal fear. 🙂

Not the soul of the dead but anything related to dead. even dead animals. I think it’s necrophobia. But i don’t dear dying. 🙂

I understand. 🙂 I am not afraid of the other side of being dead, but I am a little worried about how I’m going to get there -a car wreck, drowning, heart attack, that sort of thing. If we could all just go peacefully in our sleep, that would be great. Not everyone is so lucky, though. 🙂

Yeah. That is another part that we usually dread. 🙂 We can pray for it, though. 🙂

What a wonderful poem, Suzanne, very touching.
Genealogy is so interesting, I am sure mine would be, however I have got so many other projects 😉

You really should create a slot for it in your project list. You’d be amazed at the stories that you can uncover. Until relatively recently, I didn’t know that part of my family fell victim to a massacre involving Indians. My family members were on both sides of that battle. I have always loved history, so I guess that bleeds over into my love of family history, too. It is cool to find my family’s place in the history of this country. Have a blessed day! 🙂

A lovely poem Suzanne. What our ancestors left us should be honoured as it gave us the spirit to be what we are today.

Thank you, Davy. Very true. We are the products of everything they experienced in addition to our own experiences. Like I always say, “I am because they were.” Have a great day!
